💥$6M fine for Biden robocall 

Our Report: Steve Kramer—the political consultant who sent AI-generated robocalls to New Hampshire voters, mimicking President Biden’s voice telling them “not to vote”, ahead of the presidential elections—faces a huge fine and criminal charges.

🔑 Key Points:

• New Hampshire’s general attorney charged Kramer with 26 counts for violating the law by impersonating a presidential candidate and attempting to deter someone from voting.

• The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued Kramer with a $6M fine for the "scam calls he set up to defraud voters" in violation of a federal Caller ID law.

• The FCC has also fined Lingo Telecom—the telecom company accused of transmitting the robocalls—$2M for violating its “know your customer” principles.

🤔 Why you should care: The FCC said that this enforcement is the “first-of-its-kind” involving AI, and comes after they confirmed that AI voice-cloning tools in robocalls are banned, and introduced a proposal requiring political advertisers to disclose if they’ve used AI content in TV or radio ads, showing they’re taking steps to prevent the spread of AI-generated misinformation in political campaigns.

🎬 Meta and Google woo Hollywood

Our Report: Meta and Google are in talks with major Hollywood studios to license their content to improve their AI video generation models, which can generate realistic scenes from text prompts.

🔑 Key Points:

• Google announced its new AI video generation tool—Veo—during its Google I/O conference last week, and Meta has been working on its own AI video model—Emu—since last year.

• Netflix and Disney don’t want to license their content but have “expressed interest” in some sort of collaboration, while Warner Brothers is willing “to license some of its content.”

• This comes after Google and Meta’s rival, OpenAI, had discussions with Hollywood execs, back in February, about the potential integration of its text-to-video model, Sora.

🤔 Why you should care: There’s a growing concern among Hollywood studios about how AI companies might use (and have used) their creative work without permission—infringing copyright laws—which was exacerbated this week, when actress Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of copying her voice for its “Sky” voice assistant in ChatGPT.

Our Report: The AI-powered search app, Arc Search (from The Browser Company), has a new feature—Call Arc—which allows users to get search results, by calling the app.

🔑 Key Points:

• While Arc Search already has a ‘Voice Search’ feature, Call Arc delivers answers faster than typing and is a new “fun” way for users to get immediate answers to questions, on the go.

• To activate the new feature, users just open the app, hold their mobile to their ear, ask their question and the app will provide a voice response and wait for your next question.

• The new search experience is designed to make it feel like users are “picking up their mobile and calling a buddy” and is ideal for “on the go” situations like making dinner.

🤔 Why you should care: Although it sounds similar to a voice search feature, which is nothing new, The Browser Company have launched Call Arc because it taps into the natural habit we have of picking up our mobiles and talking to someone, making the search process even quicker and easier, especially when we’re “on the go.”

💃 Hola! Spotify's Spanish DJ

Our Report: Spotify is reportedly developing a Spanish version of its AI DJ feature (DJX), which plays AI-powered, personalized song selections for users.

🔑 Key Points:

• According to reports, users will be able to switch the DJs language from English to Spanish, it will be available for Mexican users first, and it will be called “DJ Livi”, rather than “DJX.”

• DJ Livi will be the first language expansion for Spotify’s AI DJ feature, as DJX—which was launched, globally, in March last year—is currently just available in English.

• Spotify is likely doing this because 42M people speak Spanish in the US (a key market for them), and Spanish is the fourth most spoken language (behind English, Mandarin and Hindi).

🤔 Why you should care: This comes as Spotify announced its testing an AI-powered playlist feature, and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek hinted at plans to use AI for new personalization features, ads and podcast summaries.
