Amazon is building a data center in Pecos County, Texas, powered by an on-site natural gas plant that, once operational, will become the single largest source of carbon emissions in the United States. The facility is permitted to release 33 million tons of CO₂ annually, more than any other power plant currently operating in the country.
Amazon confirmed the plant will power its data center with "new on-site generation that won't raise electricity costs for Texas families," but declined to address the climate impact of burning natural gas at this scale.
The company's carbon emissions jumped 16% last year, driven largely by AI infrastructure expansion, moving in the opposite direction of its 2040 net-zero pledge.
An Amazon spokesperson acknowledged "the world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge," while insisting the company's commitment remains unchanged.
For enterprise leaders, this signals a shift in how hyperscalers are handling AI infrastructure costs. Amazon is choosing dedicated power generation over grid competition, which could set a precedent for other cloud providers facing similar capacity constraints. Companies relying on AWS should track whether this model spreads, it may affect vendor sustainability commitments and complicate corporate ESG reporting for customers.
THE BUSINESS BRIEFING: SALES (powered by Upscaile)
Stream (developer API platform, sells to engineering teams) was bleeding hours to tool sprawl. SDRs ran outbound across Salesloft, ZoomInfo, LeadIQ, and Salesforce, losing real selling time to context-switching and manual email validation before every call. They consolidated into Amplemarket when multiple renewals hit the same window.
Tool used: Amplemarket -- AI-native sales platform combining prospecting, sequencing, dialing, enrichment, and intent signals in one interface.
Result: $7.23M pipeline generated in four months. 124 meetings booked. 46% of interested replies converted to meetings. SDRs reclaimed 287 hours of manual work and 18.5 days of sequence-building time.
The lesson: AI handled the scaffolding, not the first touch. Stream's reps still own personalized opening emails and live calls. Duo Copilot builds the sequence structure so reps spend time on what humans do better: real-time conversations.
Steal this: Count how many tools your SDRs touch before making a single cold call. If it's more than two, map where time leaks happen. Start with one consolidation: sequencer + enrichment, or dialer + CRM context. Don't automate across four disconnected systems.

THE POLICY CORNER
China bans AI girlfriends and virtual relatives for anyone under 18.
Five Chinese regulators enacted rules barring companies from offering minors "virtual partners" or "virtual relatives" through AI chatbots. ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent pulled companion features from mainstream apps within days of the July 15 effective date. The law requires real-name registration with age verification, parental consent for users under 14, mandatory intervention when users express self-harm intentions, and two-hour usage reminders.
Deadline: In effect now. Security assessments required when services hit 1M users or 100K monthly actives.
Risk: Fines range RMB 10,000-200,000 ($1,400-$28,000), but regulators can order services shut down entirely. Beijing Daily found uneven enforcement in July, with some apps still skipping age checks.
Your move: If you operate AI companion features, audit your age-gating mechanisms this week. Character.AI and OpenAI already restricted minors voluntarily after US lawsuits. Expect similar pressure to spread.
