🤐 Apple’s secret AI lab filled with ex-Google staff

Our Report: Apple has built a secret AI research lab in Zurich, Switzerland—called the “Vision Lab”—and is hiring top AI talent in the industry to lead it, mostly from Google.

🔑 Key Points: 

• Apple’s acquisition of two Swiss-based AI startups—FaceShift (Virtual Reality) and Fashwell (image generation)—reportedly drove it to open the AI research lab.

• The lab aims to develop AI models to rival Apple’s competitors, and to accomplish this mission, Apple has poached at least 36 AI specialists from Google, since 2018.

• AI experts they’ve stolen from Google include John Giannandrea (who previously led Google Brain) and Ruoming Pang (who led Google’s AI speech recognition research).

🤨 Why you should care: Apple has kept its Zurich operations a secret (in keeping with its overall approach to AI activity) but rumors are circling that the lab is working on AI-powered features for the launch of the upcoming iOS 18, which is expected to be announced in June, at its Worldwide Developers Conference.

🌏 Microsoft invests in Southeast Asia 2x in 2 days

• One day after it declared a $1.7B commitment to Indonesia's AI infrastructure, Microsoft announced it’s building Thailand’s first regional data center and investing in its AI infrastructure.

• Alongside its funding in AI infrastructure, Microsoft is also pledging to train 100,000 Thai entrepreneurs and 2.5M people in Southeast Asia on how to utilize AI, by 2025.

• Amazon has rebranded CodeWhisperer—Amazon’s AI coding tool—to ‘Q Developer’ after it struggled to match the momentum of its chief competitor, GitHub Copilot.

• Doug Seven (Amazon's Director of AI Developer Experiences) has established that Q Developer is the “evolution of CodeWhisperer into something that’s much broader.”

• It has improved relevancy and, based on developer queries, can generate code to create and manage databases, plus test, refine, and implement code, rivaling GitHub.

CHATBOTS

🏢 Yelp’s AI chatbot finds and talks to local businesses

• Review company—Yelp—has launched an AI-powered conversational chatbot, “Yelp Assistant” (powered by OpenAI), to help users find local professionals and businesses.

• Yelp Assistant can find relevant local businesses and draft and submit requests to those businesses (on your behalf), including inquiries about pricing and availability.

• The AI assistant can be found in the "Projects" tab on the Yelp app and is currently available to iOS users, with plans to roll out to Android devices later this year.
