Federal prosecutors in California believe that 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, a Florida resident who previously lived in Pacific Palisades, used ChatGPT to generate an AI image depicting a burning city months before he “maliciously” started the Lachman Fire in January 2025—one of the deadliest wildfires in state history.
Officials say the blaze later reignited and grew into the Palisades wildfire, which killed 12 people, destroyed 6,000 structures, and scorched over 23,000 acres across Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and Malibu.
Investigators discovered a ChatGPT prompt, written by Rinderknecht, requesting a “dystopian painting showing a burning forest and a crowd fleeing from it,” which was created “a few months before” the blaze.
Another prompt from Rinderknecht asked, “Are you at fault if a fire is lit because of cigarettes?” They also found video surveillance, witnesses, and phone data placing Rinderknecht near the fire’s origin.
The case underscores growing concerns around AI-assisted criminal activity and whether AI tools can serve as evidence of intent. It also raises questions for AI developers about content moderation and accountable use, particularly when outputs involve graphic or violent imagery. As investigations continue, both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and AI policy experts are calling for clearer regulations governing how individuals interact with AI systems, and how those interactions may be interpreted in court.

Multinational tech giant Cisco has launched a new networking chip, called the P200, that’s designed to link AI data centers across vast distances for large-scale model training.
According to reports, Microsoft and Chinese AI conglomerate Alibaba are early P200 customers and have already integrated the AI chip into their cloud infrastructures.
Microsoft believes that the P200 provides “more options” in the AI chip space, as, according to Cisco, it uses 65% less power than other, similar chips, and just one chip is the equivalent of 92 chips.
SoftBank has invested $5.4B to acquire ABB’s robotics division, deepening its commitment to advanced robotics and expanding its portfolio beyond previous ventures like Pepper.
Founder Masayoshi Son has called robotics “SoftBank’s next frontier in Physical AI,” aiming to drive a “ground-breaking evolution that will propel humanity forward.”
The move is part of SoftBank’s larger AI strategy across four pillars: robots, chips, data centers, and energy, supporting Son’s vision to dominate superintelligent AI development.
