💰 DeepSeek makes a 545% profit?

DeepSeek makes a 545% profit?

🚨 Our Report — Chinese AI disruptor DeepSeek, makers of the viral R1, ended its “Open Source Week” claiming that, if it looks at the average usage of its AI models (R1 and V3) over a 24hr-period—based on R1 pricing—theoretically, it would make $562,027 in daily revenue, giving them a “cost profit margin” of 545% (5x the costs of development).

🔓 Key Points:

  • This is because R1 is open-source, reducing the need for expensive infrastructure; it cost just $5.6M to train (OpenAI spent $100M training GPT-4), and its rapid adoption allowed DeepSeek to capture market share.

  • However, despite the mind-blowing revenue and profit margin figures, DeepSeek was quick to point out that its actual, real-life revenue is "substantially lower" than this, as they don’t monetize all of its services.

  • They also give users discounts during off-peak periods (like during the night, for example), the pricing for V3 is much lower than R1, and the development costs don’t include all the R&D and training expenses.

🔐 Relevance — Although these impressive figures are no more than a gesture of what its future potential could look like—rather than a real snapshot of its true bottom line—its low-cost, high-profit business model does put the cat-among-the-pigeons for competitors like OpenAI, as they rush to make their business models more efficient and cost-effective, and suggests that the industry might be on the cusp of becoming profitable.

❌ No smart Siri until 2027?

No smart Siri until 2027?

🚨 Our Report — According to notable Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is struggling to integrate Apple Intelligence AI features into Siri and will not be releasing the highly anticipated “modernized and more conversational” version—which Apple has touted as being more natural and human-like—until 2027.

🔓 Key Points:

  • Many expected the new, conversational Siri to arrive in May (with the release of iOS 18.5), but although this update will still bring new AI features to Siri, the advanced features aren’t likely to land until the release of iOS 20.

  • Currently, Siri has two ‘brains’—one for simple tasks, the other for complex ones—and Apple is working on a Large Language Model (LLM) that will combine the two into one unified brain called ‘LLM Siri’.

  • LLM Siri is expected to be announced at the World Wide Developer Conference in June, ahead of launching in 2026, and then, according to Gurman, Apple will be able to fully develop “Siri’s advanced capabilities.”

🔐 Relevance — Although Gurman expects that Apple will add new AI features to the iOS 18.5 release this year, he doesn’t believe they will “significantly improve the existing iPhone,” and Apple users will have to wait a few more years to see any groundbreaking AI-powered updates.

💥 Firefox infuriates users with AI miscommunication

  • Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, updated its usage agreement last week, causing a huge backlash among its already dwindling user base (Firefox has 2.54% share of the browser market vs Chrome, which has 67%).

  • Users were outraged over the “vague,” ambiguous, and all-encompassing language Mozilla used, which seemingly suggested that it could do whatever it wanted with users' data.

  • In response, Mozilla re-updated its agreement, established it hasn’t changed its data policy, and clarified why it used ambiguous phrases eg. “nonexclusive” (Mozilla meant it didn’t want “exclusive licenses to user data”).
