Chinese AI start-up, DeepSeek, has released an updated version of their viral reasoning model, R1, called R1-0528. Although the upgraded model is better at coding, math, and general knowledge, itās also become more censored and refuses to answer contentious questions.
Studies have found that R1-0528 is āthe most censored model for criticism of the Chinese government,ā and will not answer 85% of questions that the government finds politically controversial.
Chinese law states that AI models canāt generate content that ādamages the unity of the country,ā which basically means content that contradicts the government's historic and political narratives.
However, the upgraded modelās accuracy has increased from 70% to 87.5% (due to better reasoning capabilities), it hallucinates less, and its performance is nearly as good as OpenAIās o3 reasoning model.
Despite its improved performance, R1-0528ās increased censorship is concerning. DeepSeek (and many other Chinese AI firms) make their models open, so developers around the globe can build on top of their AI models. However, if the core AI model is heavily censored, this could trigger potential bias and potentially help spread Chinese-influenced narratives across the world. Hugging Face CEO, ClĆ©ment Delangue, recently warned about the unintended consequences of Western Companies building on top of open, well-performing Chinese AI models, like DeepSeekās R1-0528.
