Google’s AI finds 20 bugs

🚨 Our Report

Google’s experimental AI-powered bug hunter—codenamed Big Sleep—has found and reported its first batch of security issues across multiple widely used open-source software.

🔓 Key Points

  • Big Sleep, which was built by Google’s AI team, DeepMind, and its security team, Project Zero, found 20 bugs autonomously, mainly in open-source audio, video, and image software and libraries.

  • Google hasn’t released any specific details about what these bugs are and what impact they’ve had on users, but this is standard practice with bugs or vulnerabilities that haven’t yet been fixed.

  • Although there was “a human expert in the loop” (to review the bugs before they were reported), Google feels Big Sleep's findings represent “a new frontier in automated vulnerability discovery.”

🔐 Relevance

Big Sleep isn’t the only AI-powered bug hunter; there are several others on the market, such as RunSybil and XBOW. But they all need some degree of human intervention during the process, to verify that the bugs are legitimate, as critics have complained that many of these tools are prone to hallucination, and will often make up bugs that aren’t real.

How Mastercard used AI to reduce fraud

  • Mastercard—which processes 160B transactions yearly—was struggling to detect and prevent fraud, using traditional, manual methods.

  • They needed millisecond‑level decision-making to block or pass transactions without disrupting the user experience.

  • They built Decision Intelligence, an AI platform that monitors how a user normally types, holds a device, or uses apps, and flags any anomalies

  • As a result, they’re processing 160B transactions/year, blocking/passing each one in under 50 milliseconds—impossible for manual systems.

  • Elon Musk’s AI start-up, xAI, has launched ‘Grok Imagine’, an AI-powered image and video generator that turns text or image prompts into 15-second videos, featuring “native audio.”

  • Musk has always positioned Grok as a limitless, uncensored AI, and true to form, users have discovered that Grok Imagine has a “spicy mode” which allows them to generate explicit content.

  • Although Grok Imagine does appear to have some limitations (it will blur out certain things, making content somewhat inaccessible), users can generate content such as semi-nude imagery and video.

FULL STORY
  • AI security network and infrastructure provider, Cloudflare, has accused AI search engine start-up, Perplexity, of scraping content from websites that have explicitly blocked crawlers and scraping activity.

  • In a published report, it said it had witnessed Perplexity ignoring blocks and hiding its identity when scraping websites for content, in an attempt to “circumvent the website’s preferences.”

  • Cloudflare began investigations after complaints about Perplexity’s crawler scraping sites without permission, but Perplexity has dismissed Cloudflare’s accusations, calling them nothing but a “sales pitch.”
