🤝 Hollywood secures protection from AI exploitation

Our Report: Hollywood Actors have finally secured a labor agreement that requires studios to gain consent and provide payment to actors for AI-generated material that uses their likeness (118-day strike).

🔑 Key Points:

  • SAG-AFTRA's deal was reached after a lengthy 118-day strike, establishing vital consent rights and a baseline for AI usage compensation—which will be made public knowledge after SAG-AFTRA national board approval.

  • This agreement comes following the Writers Guild of America strike (148-day strike, the longest in its history), where Hollywood screenwriters secured similar AI-related disclosures and protections

  • Initial concerns that sparked the strike included actors fearing that AI could replace them, with background and voice actors particularly concerned about losing work to synthetic counterparts.

  • According to SAG-AFTRAs lead negotiator, the deal will last 3 years, and actors "have this right of consent, and the right to fair compensation anytime some sort of digital replica or replacement of them is used,"

🤨 Why you should care: The establishment of clear regulations on AI usage in the entertainment industry marks a significant development in the protection of performers’ rights and sets a precedent for the management of AI’s inclusion within the entertainment industry.

😢😊 OpenAI expands data partnerships to understand human emotions

OpenAI has invited organizations to collaborate on creating open-source and private datasets to train AI models more effectively—with the goal of developing AI that deeply understands subject matters, cultures, languages & industries.

So far, they’ve already established partnerships with the likes of The Icelandic Government (to improve GPT-4’s ability to speak Icelandic), and The Free Law Project (to democratize legal understanding), and are looking for new partnerships to increase the depth of understanding for future GPT-4 models.

London's Eilla AI (a generative AI startup for financial professionals) has raised $1.5M in seed funding to streamline tasks like financial research and document drafting, promising to elevate efficiency by automating routine work and analyzing vast data faster.

We love to highlight stories such as this, where 3 childhood friends capitalize on emerging technology to spark innovation in a stagnant industry—reducing mundane, manual workloads to mere minutes using the power of AI.
