🤨 Is Meta lying about using copyright materials?

Our Report: Multiple authors have alleged that Meta used copyrighted books for AI training despite its own lawyers' warnings, leading to another lawsuit.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Apparently, according to sources, Meta’s lawyers warned against using pirated books to train AI models, but the company proceeded regardless (as was revealed in a recent lawsuit filing).

  • The lawsuit, involving comedian Sarah Silverman and author Michael Chabon, alleges Meta used their works without permission for its Llama AI model, with a California judge allowing the claim to proceed to trial.

  • Furthermore, chat logs from a Meta-affiliated researcher indicate awareness of potential legal issues with the dataset used for training and highlight the very real possibility that Meta knew the entire time but proceeded regardless.

🤨 Why you should care: The outcome of these lawsuits could lead the way for generations of lawsuits based on improper data practices used in training AI models. Furthermore, the EU AI regulations announced earlier in the week highlight the fundamental need for more comprehensive AI laws, regulations, and principles.

ChatGPT Prompt

✅ Abstract Art

copy & paste ⬇️

“Guide me in creating a piece of abstract art that focuses on emotion and expression.”

Optimized

"I'm looking for guidance in creating an abstract art piece that powerfully communicates a specific emotion, such as joy, sadness, anger, or tranquility. I'd like to explore how different color schemes can evoke these feelings, perhaps using warm colors like reds and oranges for passion and energy, or cool tones like blues and greens for calmness and introspection. I'm interested in techniques that can effectively express these emotions, such as bold, expressive brush strokes for intensity, or soft, blending techniques for a sense of calm. Additionally, I'd appreciate tips on how to balance the composition with abstract forms, like using geometric shapes or free-flowing lines to represent structure or fluidity in emotion. Also, advice on incorporating textures and layers to add depth and tactile quality to the piece would be valuable. My goal is to create a visually striking and emotionally resonant work of art that invites viewers to connect with the underlying feelings."

📸 Snapchat+ subscribers can now create and send AI images

Snapchat+ subscribers now have access to new AI-powered features, including the ability to create and send AI-generated images, which can then be edited, downloaded, and shared amongst friends and connections.

Additionally, the update includes a generative AI selfie feature called Dream, allowing users to create AI selfies with friends in various scenarios. The enhancement comes months after introducing MyAI—a customizable AI chatbot within the app—and highlights a growing trend of AI chatbots targeted and marketed to a younger demographic.

😮 NYT hires first newsroom leader focussed on AI

The New York Times has appointed Zach Seward, co-founder of Quartz (a news and insights platform for business leaders) as the editorial director of AI initiatives, marking a significant investment in AI technology by the newspaper.

Seward's role includes forming a team to experiment with AI tools, developing principles for the use of generative AI in journalism, and designing AI training programs for reporters. This is a huge step for traditional journalism as the past year has been filled with controversy, pushback, lawsuits, and ill will between AI and newspapers. A step in the right direction?

🕶️ RayBans that can translate languages?

Meta is introducing advanced AI features for its Ray-Ban smart glasses, enabling them to identify objects and translate languages in real-time using voice prompts that enable the glasses' camera and microphones to see and hear the surroundings.

Mark Zuckerberg showcased these capabilities by having the glasses suggest matching clothing items and translate text on Instagram, marking a significant step for Meta in integrating AI into wearable technology (currently only available to US users).
