Our Report: Microsoft and OpenAI are partnering with Semafor—a news startup—to use AI (responsibly) to find and deliver breaking global news stories via a feed, dozens of times per day.
🔑 Key Points:
The collaboration will see Semafor’s reporters use MISO (its AI-powered search tool) to find global multi-source news stories to post on its breaking news feed “Signals”, multiple times a day.
MISO (a custom GPT, built on OpenAI’s platform) uses Bing to find diverse, global perspectives on news stories, as they break, making the news curation process more efficient.
It currently finds content on English, Spanish, and Chinese sites and is in development to search on Japanese, Hindi, German, French, and Arabic sites to represent a truly global news feed.
🤨 Why you should care: This collaboration comes at an interesting time, as news outlets grapple with the benefits of AI vs the threat to their industry—as seen by the New York Times lawsuit against OpenAI for “stealing content and readers”.

Mamoon Hamid and Ilya Fushman (veteran VCs at Kleiner Perkins) recently shared insights on the firm's strategy and focus areas, notably AI, stating that at least 80% of pitches they now receive involve AI.
Having rejuvenated Kleiner Perkins with successful investments in companies like Rippling, Loom, and Figma (over $32B in combined value) they are now heavily investing in AI, recognizing it as a transformative wave in technology.
Lastly, they discussed the importance of mission and technical challenges in attracting top talent—especially in AI—and the necessity of building strong product-market fits to create durable competitive advantages.

“Using the 'Customer Development Process' framework, please write a marketing campaign outline that identifies and validates customer needs for our [product/service] and describes how you would build and test prototypes to meet those needs. Outline the steps you would take to iterate based on customer feedback and include specific tactics and metrics you would use to measure success.”
After the EU announced a breakthrough in regulating the AI industry, the UK government outlined existing laws and guidance, to “lightly supervise” the UK’s AI industry.
While they aren’t introducing new AI legislation yet, they are planning to dedicate £100M (~$125M) in funding to AI regulation and innovation projects.
They’ll allocate £10M (~$12.5M) to upskill and train regulators to apply and enforce existing laws, and £90M (~$113M) towards launching nine AI research hubs.
These hubs will generate research projects that will focus on the responsible use of AI within education, policing, and creative industries.
Zuckerberg plans to harness data from billions of posts, photos, videos, and comments from Facebook and Instagram users to advance Meta’s AI capabilities.
This has raised concerns over ethics, bias, toxicity, content moderation, and the privacy rights of Facebook’s 3B users and Instagram’s 1.5B users.
This movement comes after The New York Times sued OpenAI over claims it was training its models on their data, and concerns over Musk using tweets on X to train xAI’s chatbot, Grok.

Microsoft has announced a new AI feature (text-to-speech editing) in its Clipchamp video editor and previewed another (silence remover) that’s launching in February.
With text-to-speech editing, users can select AI-powered voices, and change the emotion, pitch, and pace, allowing them to add narration without hiring voiceover talent.
The silence removal feature will automatically identify and remove long stretches of silence in a video, useful when editing podcasts, educational videos, and voiceovers.
In addition to these new features, they’ve also released an ‘audio recording’ feature that allows users to add a voice-over to any video creation of up to 30 minutes.
