ANITRUST REGLUATIONS

📢 Microsoft shops Google to EU AI regulators

Our Report: In response to the EU’s antitrust investigation into the level of competition in AI, Microsoft has told regulators that “Google enjoys a competitive edge in AI due to its trove of data and AI-optimized chips.”

🔑 Key Points:

  • In its report, Microsoft claimed that Google was the only one in the AI space that had complete independence at every AI layer “everyone else must rely on partnerships to compete."

  • They declared that Google was positioned to leverage their existing AI into leadership positions with “new entrants not able to enjoy the same advantages."

  • Then dismissed concerns over monopolizing partnerships, claiming “partnerships prevent companies from becoming vertically integrated, resulting in an anti-competitive advantage.”

🤨 Why you should care: This highlights the ongoing rivalry between Google and Microsoft, and follows reports that (Microsoft-backed) OpenAI has signed two more content licensing agreements with publishers, potentially creating unfair competition within the AI industry.

ACQUISTIONS

🍎 Apple acquires AI start-up (hinting at future plans)

  • Apple has secretly acquired AI start-up DarwinAI—which specializes in making on-device AI models smaller and faster—remaining typically tight-lipped about the acquisition.

  • Several DarwinAI employees (including AI leader, Alexander Wong) have joined Apple’s AI team, hinting that Apple’s “upcoming AI announcements later this year” could be on-device AI.

  • This comes as—despite acquiring more AI companies than most—Apple has lagged behind in releasing AI-powered features, compared to competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Meta.

ELECTIONS

🔍 Google, Meta, and X scrutinized over AI risks

  • Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), the EU has asked Google, Meta, Microsoft, and X to establish how they’ll mitigate AI risks (such as deepfakes or misinformation) during elections.

  • They’ve been targeted because of their size (under the DSA, ‘very large online platforms’ should mitigate systemic risks), and must provide the requested information by April 3rd.

  • The EU is also planning to run a series of stress tests after Easter to test the platform's readiness to deal with AI risks ahead of the June European Parliament elections.

CREATIVE

🥊 Anthony Joshua AI-advert sparks controversy

  • Sportswear company (Under Armour) is facing fire for releasing an AI-powered ad (featuring boxer Anthony Joshua), made without the athlete, but with live footage and 3D models.

  • While the ad received praise, critics are protesting that it reused footage from filmmaker Gustav Johansson—without giving him credit—with the filmmaker publicly questioning it, himself.

  • This is an ongoing debate within the industry, with creatives arguing that there’s a difference between reusing stock footage and repurposing commissioned work without credit.
