🇦🇺 Microsoft to invest $3.2B in Australia as regulations loom

Our Report: Microsoft has announced plans to invest $3.2B USD to enhance its AI and cloud computing capabilities in Australia as part of a massive expansion at a time when Australia is contemplating regulating the AI industry.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The tech giant plans to increase its computing capacity in the country by 250%, addressing the anticipated surge in demand for cloud computing, which is expected to double from 2022 to 2026.

  • In addition to the $3.2B investment, Microsoft aims to train 300,000 Australians for the digital economy and extend a cyber threat information-sharing agreement with Australia's cyber security agency—the Australian Signals Directorate.

  • A co-authored report by Microsoft suggests that generative AI could add up to $115B AUD annually to Australia's economy by 2030 if embraced swiftly.

  • This strategic move by Microsoft is seen as a significant outreach in Australia, especially as the country started public consultations on AI regulation following the impact of ChatGPT in 2022.

🤨 Why you should care: Microsoft's investment in Australia signals a strategic move to position itself favorably in a nation on the brink of AI regulation, potentially influencing the trajectory of AI in Aus. Will the substantial investment affect Australia’s approach to AI regulation?

🛑 not your prompt 🤯

Your prompts in ChatGPT / DALLE3 are actually never used

Instead, GPT4 writes its own prompts (with clear instructions to never show them to you)

But if you ask for them, you get them

🍎 Apple to invest $1B per year to develop AI products

Apple is sharpening its emphasis on AI integration across products, with recent job listings highlighting a surge in AI roles for the App Store and Apple Retail and Bloomberg reporting a planned annual investment of $1B in AI advancements.

These job posts also hint at core AI model developments, including a "human-like conversational agent." It’s likely they’ll be upgrading Siri to a next-generation assistant akin to ChatGPT but more accessible and with the usual Apple flair.

👶 Facial recognition software blocks Children’s faces

PimEyes, a facial recognition search engine, has prohibited searches for children's faces due to safety concerns after previously being criticized for privacy breaches where users reported discovering unauthorized photos of their kids on the platform.

Despite the company's efforts to use age detection AI to block searches for minors, the technology struggles with accuracy, especially for certain angles and teenagers. The good news is, with developments like this, we’re moving further away from an Orwellian future.

🍟 NVIDIA partners with Microsoft to challenge Intel

NVIDIA (the number #1 AI chip maker in the game right now), is venturing into the personal computer market, designing CPUs that will run on ARM technology, in partnership with Microsoft, to challenge Intel's dominance.

Recently, Apple made a similar decision to produce their own M1/M2/M3 chips (ARM processors), which has corresponded to a doubling in their market share. The recent news raised Microsoft & NVIDIA stock whilst Intel fell by more than 3% in 24 hours….
