🍟 OpenAI to start developing their own AI chips?

Our Report: OpenAI is deliberating the development of proprietary AI chips amid a global chip shortage hindering progression for multiple tech companies including OpenAI, Google & Microsoft.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The ongoing global chip shortage has notably impacted the availability and cost of GPUs, driving OpenAI to consider alternative strategies like developing in-house AI chips or acquiring an AI chip manufacturer.

  • The scenario of chip scarcity isn't unique to OpenAI but is a widespread challenge, affecting tech giants like Microsoft and NVIDIA—both grappling with supply chain disruptions and sold-out inventories, respectively.

  • Ventures into the AI chip domain aren’t new; Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have already taken strides in developing or procuring proprietary AI chips to mitigate dependency on external suppliers and tailor hardware to their specific needs.

  • This move, if pursued, could position OpenAI more competitively in the AI market, reducing its reliance on external hardware suppliers, and potentially leading to more optimized and cost-effective AI solutions.

🤨 Why you should care: OpenAI's deliberation on developing its own AI chips reflects a broader trend in the tech industry to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities and foster technological self-sufficiency—a crucial step towards sustaining the rapid evolution of AI technologies.
