LATEST IN AI
🚨 Our Report — Alongside the quiet release of a smaller, cheaper version of OpenAI’s latest reasoning model, o3—aptly named, o3-mini—OpenAI has released ‘Deep Research’ (just to US Pro users, for now), an AI agent that can autonomously follow multiple steps—including “backtracking and reacting to real-time information”—to research the internet and find the data it needs to create a complex, in-depth research report “at the level of a research analyst.”
🔓 Key Points:
Deep Research is for users who need more than a quick answer—like when making “purchases that require careful research…like cars or furniture”—or who do “intensive knowledge work” in areas like science and policy.
Users—who can make just 100 queries a month—can ask it questions using text, images, and other files like spreadsheets and PDFs, and it can take between 5 and 30 minutes to construct its answer.
Its responses are “fully documented, with clear citations and a summary of thinking,” and although are currently just text-only, support for data visualizations and other “analytic” outputs is coming.
🔐 Relevance — Although OpenAI has warned users that Deep Research can “sometimes hallucinate” and may “struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors,” to help make it as accurate as possible, it’s using a specialized version of o3 that’s “optimized for web browsing and data analysis” and, as a result, the agent achieved an accuracy mark of 26.6% on ‘Humanity’s Last Exam’—one of the industry’s toughest benchmark tests, which includes over 3,000 expert-level questions in over 100 academic topics—compared to DeepSeeks viral R1 model, which scored 9.4%, and Google’s similar agentic model (Gemini Thinking) which got 6.2%.

🚨 Our Report — Yesterday, February 2nd, marked the first compliance deadline for the EU’s AI Law—a risk-based regulatory framework aimed at restricting the use of AI systems that pose an ‘unacceptable’ risk to the EU—which was approved in March, last year, and officially came into force in August.
🔓 Key Points:
For example, an AI filter for unwanted emails would be ‘minimal risk,’ as it wouldn’t need regulatory oversight, whereas an AI agent that gives healthcare advice would be 'high risk' as it would need heavy regulatory oversight.
But any AI systems that pose even more risk—like an AI that analyzes security camera images to create a facial recognition database—would be classified as 'unacceptable' and completely banned.
Any company (regardless of its headquarters) found to be using or developing AI that poses ‘unacceptable’ risks will be fined up to €35M (~$36M) or 7% of its annual turnover of the previous fiscal year, whichever is higher.
🔐 Relevance — According to experts, though, although “organizations are expected to be fully compliant by February 2nd” no fine enforcement will be implemented until August, as by then the EU “will know who the competent authorities are.”
Microsoft is creating a new Advanced Planning Unit (APU), within its AI business division, to help them understand the societal, health, and work implications of the AI systems and features it intends to build.
The APU will complete “cutting-edge research” to “explore and articulate” a range of possible scenarios for future AI products and, from this, will be expected to make recommendations for products.
CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, is looking for economists, psychologists, “and beyond” who have backgrounds in fields like quantum, nuclear, and silicon and want to work “at the cutting edge of AI science and development.”

CASE STUDY
In 2024, global logistics firm—DHL—started deploying multi-agent systems that could autonomously manage its logistical operations.
These systems coordinate logistical operations across multiple continents, predict disruptions, and forecast high customer demand.
They work with human employees to monitor and collect data on inventory levels, transportation delays, and weather conditions.
As a result, DHL has reduced delivery delays by 40% by optimizing delivery routes in real-time and predicting demand patterns and stock shortages.
