OpenAI is hiring a Head of Preparedness to lead its internal framework for identifying and mitigating “frontier” AI risks, including cybersecurity threats, biological misuse, and mental health impacts. CEO Sam Altman said the company’s models are “starting to present some real challenges,” prompting renewed focus on safety leadership after multiple executive changes in its preparedness and safety teams.
The role pays $555,000 plus equity and oversees OpenAI’s preparedness framework, which tracks and responds to high-risk AI capabilities that could cause severe harm.
Altman cited concerns about models that are “so good at computer security they are beginning to find critical vulnerabilities,” and about AI’s potential effects on mental health.
OpenAI’s preparedness team was first created in 2023 to study catastrophic risks, but its original head, Aleksander Madry, was reassigned in 2024, and other safety executives have since left.
This move signals that OpenAI is reasserting its commitment to AI safety after leadership turnover and public scrutiny. The company faces lawsuits over ChatGPT’s alleged mental health harms and growing regulatory attention. A strong preparedness lead could help rebuild confidence among policymakers and enterprise partners that OpenAI can manage the societal risks of its most advanced models.

Case Study
NatWest, a major UK retail and commercial bank, struggled to turn customer insights into personalized campaigns quickly enough to maintain engagement.
The process required 40 employees and 10 handoffs, stretching a single campaign launch to 60–100 days. Teams and customers grew frustrated.
The bank introduced an agentic AI platform that automated data analysis, campaign modeling, and testing. Manual steps and coordination delays disappeared.
The result was a 90% reduction in staffing needs and a campaign turnaround time cut to one day, boosting relevance.
