Telegram to integrate Grok…maybe?

🚨 Our Report 

Pavel Durov, founder of the Messaging platform Telegram, has announced a one-year partnership with Elon Musk to integrate Grok into its messaging app for all users (currently, the chatbot is just available for premium users). However, Musk was quick to clarify that “no deal has officially been signed yet,” suggesting there may be some further discussion around formalities. But here is what we know, so far.

🔓 Key Points

• According to Durov, Musk’s AI start-up, xAI, will pay him $300M for Grok to be integrated into the app, and he will also receive 50% of the revenue made by xAI subscriptions, bought through the app.

• Durov showed a demo of Grok generating stickers, summarizing chats and documents, writing replies, and handling content moderation and customer support tasks for businesses—all via the messaging app.

• Grok can be pinned to the top of chats within the app, and users can also ask questions from the search bar (similar to how Meta has made Meta AI accessible via the search bar on Instagram and WhatsApp).

🔐 Relevance 

Interestingly, Meta faced backlash from users after it integrated its AI chatbot into WhatsApp (which is a similar platform to Telegram). Experts feel that while social media companies are eager to integrate AI into their services, it might not be what users want: "Users still use social platforms to talk to their friends and see their friends' updates…adding AI into direct messaging reduces trust between users.” This has left many questioning: Will the partnership between Telegram and xAI work?

• Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings has joined Anthropic’s board of directors to use his experience at tech companies—like Netflix, Microsoft, Bloomberg, and Meta—to help it develop into a big tech conglomerate.

• However, Anthropic was quick to establish that Hastings was appointed by its Long Term Benefit Trust—an independent, “financially disinterested” body—which is there to help Anthropic develop AI for the benefit of humanity.

• Hastings is joining Anthropic’s board because he likes “their approach to AI development…to help humanity,” and will join existing members: Anthropic's two co-founders, a key investor, and the CEO of Confluent.

• Saudi Arabia’s state-owned AI start-up, Humain (which launched ahead of President Trump’s visit), is launching ‘Humain Ventures,’ a $10B VC fund that will invest in AI startups across the US, Europe, and Asia.

• Humain is seeking backing from key US tech companies, including OpenAI, a16z, and xAI, and is also in talks with some “massive names in the data center segment” about buying equity in its data center business.

• This comes after Trump allowed US tech suppliers to strike deals with Saudi Arabian firms, and Humain has already secured deals with NVIDIA, AMD, and Amazon to help fulfil its 1.9GW of data center capacity by 2030.
