Trump: “Deepfakes now totally illegal”

Trump: “Deepfakes now totally illegal”

🚨 Our Report

President Donald Trump has signed the ‘Take It Down’ bill into law, meaning it will now be illegal to post and distribute non-consensual intimate images (including AI-generated ones). Trump clarified that “countless women have been harassed with deepfakes distributed against their will,” which is “just so horribly wrong,” so is “making it totally illegal.”

🔓 Key Points

  • The bill makes it a federal crime to “knowingly publish” or threaten to publish intimate images (real or AI-generated) without a person’s consent, and will be punishable by up to three years imprisonment plus fines.

  • Websites and social media platforms are also now obligated to take down any non-consensual material within 48 hours of being notified, and must “make reasonable efforts” to delete duplicates.

  • The bill was supported by the First Lady and over 100 tech companies—including Meta and Google—and was passed by both chambers of Congress almost unanimously (only 2 voted against it).

🔐 Relevance

Despite the huge support for the legislation, several critics from digital rights groups believe the bill is too “ambiguously drafted,” meaning it will “be hard for a court to parse when it will be enforced unconstitutionally.” They warn that “lawful content – including satire, journalism, and political speech – could be wrongly censored,” allowing users to sue if they have lawful content wrongly deleted from platforms. This is tied to the tight 48-hour timeframe websites and social media platforms have to delete illicit images. They worry that (in particular) the “smaller ones will have to comply so quickly to prevent legal risk that they will not be able to verify accusations properly.”

Microsoft’s enabling chatbots for all websites

🚨 Our Report

During its annual Microsoft Build 2025 Keynote, Microsoft announced NLWeb (or Natural Language Web), which is an ‘open’ project designed to make adding AI chatbots to websites easier. The idea is to give website users a “conversational interface” and the ability to ask questions, in natural language, on any website.

🔓 Key Points

  • With NLWeb, businesses can, with just a few lines of code, their own data, and the AI model of their choice (meaning it doesn’t have to be Microsoft’s model, Copilot), add a fully customized AI chatbot to their website.

  • Some early NLWeb adopters include Tripadvisor, Shopify, and O’Reilly Media, and Microsoft believes this will make websites more interactive and allow more businesses to join the “agentic web.”

  • For example, a retailer could use NLWeb to build a chatbot that helps a user pick clothes for a specific occasion or trip, or a cooking website can use it to suggest dish pairings for certain recipes.

🔐 Relevance

Many believe that the origins of NLWeb actually came from close partner, OpenAI. Rumors were circulating, last November, that OpenAI was working with partners (including Condé Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline) to bring ChatGPT-like conversational features to their websites. But, reportedly, the project didn’t come to fruition, thanks to technical issues.

FULL STORY
  • Last year, Swiss Fin-Tech company Klarna (famous for its “Buy Now, Pay Later” options) announced it was integrating OpenAI-powered AI systems across its internal operational processes.

  • Since then, it stopped hiring (relying on AI instead of humans) and has now established that it’s on track to make $1M in revenue per employee, thanks to the efficiencies its AI-powered systems have created.

  • This is a $425k increase, per worker, from last year, with AI delivering the biggest cost savings in the customer service department, after Klarna announced it planned to replace 700 customer service agents with AI.
