Our Report: At a press briefing on Thursday, AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced some new estimates to the total valuation of the chip market, and introduced 2 new AI data center chips.

• AMD estimated that the total valuation of their data center processors is $45B, up from a $30B estimate in June—due to an exponential influx in both the number of AI companies entering production and the increase in the scale of existing AI companies.

• Furthermore, AMD introduced two new AI data center chips from its MI300 lineup: one for generative AI applications (MI300X) and another for supercomputers with increased bandwidth & memory.

• Lastly, AMD has prepared a "significant" supply of AI chips for 2024, valued "well above" $2B in order to satisfy the growing demand for AI data center chips which is expected to grow to about $400B by 2027.

🇪🇺 EU Lawmakers Reach Preliminary Agreement on AI

EU lawmakers, after over 20 hours of negotiations, have reached a preliminary agreement on regulating AI, particularly foundational models/general purpose AIs (GPAIs).

The proposal, resisting full industry lobbying for deregulation, includes partial exemptions for open-source GPAIs but retains a tiered regulatory approach for private companies. Ultimately, the agreement, which we see as a positive, aims to balance innovation and public safety—something we think is an absolute necessity to protect end users.

🤝 AI DNA Typewriter technology raises $75M 

The Seattle Hub for Synthetic Biology, funded by $75M from tech billionaires (Including Mark Zuckerberg & Melissa Chan), is a new biotech initiative aiming to develop "DNA typewriter" technology—which would create self-monitoring cells that could revolutionize our understanding of biology.

This project—a collaboration between the University of Washington, the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, and the Allen Institute— has been likened to a 'smartwatch for cells', and aims to observe and record cellular activities over time using DNA, and use AI to decode sequences once recorded.
