TOGETHER WITH IBM
Digital sovereignty has become a CEO-level priority. IBM outlines why controlling data, technology, and operations is essential to help scale AI responsibly—and to protect market access as sovereignty mandates accelerate.
What you’ll learn:
Why now: Sovereignty requirements are rising globally, raising stakes for trust and compliance.
Beyond residency: It’s about who operates, accesses, and audits AI workloads—verifiable control by design.
Strategy fit: Align hybrid cloud, AI, and emerging tech under a sovereign operating model.
Latest in AI
UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has announced Barnsley, a South Yorkshire community of 250,000 people, as Britain's first "tech town" in an effort to show how AI can improve everyday life. Microsoft, Google, Cisco, and Adobe have agreed to support the initiative, which will test AI in local schools, hospitals, GPs, and businesses.
The town was chosen because it has already adopted AI faster than many UK areas, with AI assistants in social care and bin lorries scanning roads for potholes.
Residents will get free AI and digital training, businesses will receive support to adopt AI, and the local hospital will test AI tools for check-ins, triage, and outpatient care.
Local opposition leaders have warned the rebrand "might seem a bit of a leap" and noted anxiety among residents about whether AI is truly a force for good.
This announcement is part of Labour's broader push to inject AI into British public services and follows last week's launch of a national AI training programme to upskill 10 million citizens. For enterprise leaders, the initiative shows how governments may increasingly partner with tech firms to pilot AI in local services. Vendors and consultancies working in public sector AI could see demand rise if the "tech town" model expands.
Case Study
SandboxAQ, spun out of Alphabet, partnered with The Michael J. Fox Foundation to accelerate Parkinson's drug discovery. AI handles ~95% of compound screening; humans validate results and guide clinical decisions.
Pattern: AI autonomously screens compounds and designs small molecules. Researchers review candidates and validate results before clinical development proceeds.
Why it matters: No therapy targeting the LRRK2 gene has reached market. It's the most common genetic cause of inherited Parkinson's disease.
Metric: Drug discovery accelerated by 36x, with a goal of optimizing four LRRK2 inhibitors within 24 months.
Steal this: Identify one workflow where you manually review large volumes of data or options. Let AI filter to a shortlist; make the final call yourself.

AI News Story
OpenAI released a new macOS desktop app for Codex, its AI coding tool, designed to let developers run multiple agents in parallel, automate repetitive tasks, and manage long-running projects from a single interface. More than a million developers have used Codex in the past month, and usage has doubled since GPT-5.2-Codex launched in mid-December.
The app introduces "Skills" that extend Codex beyond code generation to tasks like deploying apps to Cloudflare or Vercel, managing Linear projects, and generating images. OpenAI also added "Automations" that run on scheduled intervals for tasks like daily issue triage and release summaries. A four-person engineering team used Codex to build and ship the Sora Android app in 28 days, according to the company.
The launch intensifies OpenAI's competition with Anthropic, whose Claude Code tool has gained traction among enterprises including Uber, Netflix, and Salesforce. OpenAI is temporarily making Codex available to ChatGPT Free and Go users and doubling rate limits across paid plans.
AI News Story
Carbon Robotics has launched the Large Plant Model (LPM), an AI model trained on 150 million photos that can recognize any plant species on the fly, allowing its autonomous weed-killing robots to target new weeds without retraining.
The Seattle-based company says the model eliminates the 24-hour retraining cycle previously needed when robots encountered unfamiliar weeds, enabling farmers to identify and target new plants in real time.
With machines operating across 100+ farms in 15 countries, the update positions Carbon Robotics to scale its precision agriculture tech faster while reducing downtime for customers.
