GLOBAL ELECTIONS

🤚 Gemini refuses to answer election queries

Our Report: Google has announced that it will be restricting all election-related queries made in Gemini (it’s ChatGPT equivalent), in any country where an election is taking place.

Key Points:

  • The update is live in India—where elections will take place in April—and the US, and is expected to be rolled out to 50+ countries, which are holding elections this year.

  • Any questions relating to political parties, candidates, or politicians will now return a preset message: “I’m still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google Search.”

  • However, Google is still making tweaks to Gemini’s responses, as it can return more detailed responses to follow-up election-related questions or queries containing typos.

Why you should care: This highlights Google’s concern over the weaponization of Gemini to manipulate voters, and its potential to produce inaccurate responses (after the controversy surrounding its image generator) and spotlights the need for tighter AI regulatory controls.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

🧑‍💻 Devin: The world's first AI software engineer

  • AI start-up—Cognition—has launched Devin, the world's first AI software engineer which is expected to transform how code is written, tested, and implemented.

  • Based on prompts, Devin can create and release websites or software programs, and has already completed paid jobs and passed engineering interviews.

  • It remembers details, corrects errors, and works with developers and designers by implementing feedback, providing progress updates, and collaborating on decisions.

Is this good or bad news for the software development industry?

  • ✅ Good: It will allow human engineers to focus on more complex problems.
  • ❌ Bad: Human software engineers are likely to be replaced by increasingly capable AI systems.

DESIGN

🖼️ Midjourney tests its most requested feature

  • Image-generation tool—Midjourney—is testing its most sought-after feature that lets users create the same character, across new images and styles.

  • Creatives can now create consistent characters in different environments, with different backgrounds, props, etc.. reducing inconsistency found with AI-generated images.

  • The feature isn’t designed to replicate real people from real photographs, it works best when it’s used to generate characters created within the Midjourney platform.

CHATBOTS

🍵 Perplexity adds Yelp reviews to its chatbot

  • AI start-up—Perplexity—is integrating Yelp review data into its chatbot so it can give more accurate responses to user queries about restaurant reviews and ratings.

  • It will now include maps, photos, and quotes from reviews in its responses, making it a reliable option for users looking for restaurants, bars, and cafes.

  • Perplexity is planning to include more chatbot integrations and is already collaborating with the answer engine–WolframAlpha–to use its data for mathematical computations.
